Parnassus Treble, Tenor, Tenor-Treble,
Baritone and Bass
order information
Parnassus tonewoods.
In order to guarantee the unique sound characteristics of the Parnassus models,
the tonewoods used in the Parnassus models are predetermined. Just as string
instruments, the Parnassus models are made out of maple and spruce.
The reedpan, soundboards, buttonboards, and the bottom Rosette (there are 2
layers in the rosette), are made out of (quartered) European maple. The
faceplates are Engelmann spruce.
The bellows frames and guides are made out of a very dense type of spruce
imported from New Zealand. The soundposts (connecting the soundboards to the face
plates) are split Engelmann spruce.
Parnassus options
- frame veneers/faceplate corners
Frame veneers and faceplate corners are normally out of the same wood, except
for amboyna veneers we use mahogany corners.
- top layer of the rosette
The rosette (top) can by made out of any densely grained wood. The
rosette often
matches the veneer/corner wood or the color of the bellows. E.g. amboyna
veneers/mahogany rosette, English walnut veneers/Eng. walnut rosette, etc. Or
matching the color of the bellows: black bellows/ebony rosette.
It is also possible to use a piece of wood that has a special meaning for
the owner.
For example, a piece of wood from an heirloom, etc. For example, we have made
an
instrument in the past with a rosette out of wood connected to child that had
recently passed away.
- faceplate purfling
The faceplate purfling is inlaid (1/4 depth of the thickness of the
faceplate).
Normally this is either ebony or maple, but any type of wood is possible.
- frame border
The frame border is the contrasting stringing between the top and
bottom frame.
This is often the same wood as the purfling (ebony), but can also be out
of maple
or any other contrasting wood.
- hand support
Hand supports are available on all Parnassus models. The hand
supports are
mounted on the frames of the instrument. They prevent hand/wrist contact
with
the faceplate, and raise the wrist to improve the hand position for classical
players
using 4 fingers.
Hand supports normally match the veneers, but can also match the rosette.
For
example, on an instrument with English walnut veneers, black bellows and
ebony
rosette. the hand support can be out of English walnut or ebony.
- Color of the bellows
Parnassus bellows are low resistance bellows made out of
Morocco goat skins.
We import the hides ourselves. Because it is considered a
'specialty' product, the
available colors limited to black (standard), light and dark brown
and green. The
hides are dyed per order, and are unique.
The thumbstraps are made out of black Nappa leather with a Goat
skin top. This
top matches the color of the bellows. The fingerrest leather
also matches the
bellows and thumbstraps.
- Buttons
The buttons are metal capped over a delrin core. The caps can be
domed or flat.
- Plating
The buttons, fingerrests, and thumbscrews can be either nickel (standard)
or 24k
gold plated. The endbolts are (handmade) out of MS58 brass.
-Case
The Parnassus model comes with a custom made case with double birch
walls,
covered in black leather with a red velvet lining and brass hardware .
